She is still quite thin but has relaxed in a suite at the shelter and is ready for a real home. We think this long, slender tortoiseshell girl is 6 – 8 years old. Quiet and friendly, Misha is ready to put her days of fending for herself behind her and eager to share her company from now on with someone in a calm home. We think Misha would prefer to be the only pet, but her only other requirements for a happy life would be a sunny window for naps, a reliable source of food, and someone to give her the affection she missed out on these last few months.

Our shelter is located at 44 Beagle Lane in Teaticket. Visit Misha and our other cats on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or call our hotline for an appointment.

This month is very, very busy as so many outdoor tasks and household must dos are crying for our attention. It may mean painting, cleaning out garages for that sale, power washing the deck, cleaning windows and putting in screens, retrieving outdoor furniture from its winter storage location and the list goes on and on. Memorial Day is on the horizon and many of us anticipate the arrival of guests and planning for those festive cookouts.

In the garden things are really “revving” up. Ours lawns need weekly mowing, the weeds are showing up and most of our perennials have made their appearance and perhaps you have already harvested some of those cold hardy lettuces in your vegetable garden. May is the month we look forward to planting the beautiful color that annuals bring to our gardens and containers. The excitement of choosing those perfect pots, urns and flower boxes to fill with a profusion of bloom is perhaps the most welcomed gardening task for me. Every year we are presented with new selections and it is like looking at a litter of puppies_I want them all! How do we select from all these choices and what cultural practices will ensure months of enjoyment from these displays?

If you are anything like me this is a real seek and find adventure for rarely do I find all the right plants in the right combination of color, texture and habit at one nursery. So it usually takes me over a week to gather the palette for this season_usually a revision from last year’s display. Select a container(s) that you positively love, the bigger the better or opt for a grouping of three in varying heights, purchase quality potting soil ( Miracle Gro is good ), select plants that reflect your color scheme and have contrasting textures and heights; i.e. tall thrillers, lower fillers and trailing spillers. After planting sprinkle in some granular slow-release fertilizer like Osmocote and remember to use a water soluble liquid fertilizer at least twice a month to keep those flowers popping. Some plants need regular dead heading and I usually do some serious pruning of more aggressive plants by mid July. If you want to simplify maintenance, group your containers and design a convenient watering system because by August the ‘bucket drill’ will become a daily necessity.

The flower box here (above) was designed for the Centerville library and features a beautiful ‘azak’ box from Walpole Woodworkers filled with a combination of dwarf boxwood and cascading juniper for all season interest. After the summer show it is refreshed with fall flowers and then ultimately decorated for Christmas. The ‘thrillers’ here are tiny “Italian Cypress’ trees and mandevilla vine. Geraniums, supertunias, bacopa and ivy ‘fill’ and ‘spill’. This combination was a great performer and greeted visitors all Summer long. NOTE: This photo was rendered with a watercolor filter in Photoshop to impart an ‘impressionistic’ feeling.

Summer is around the corner, and this season on the Cape, it’s all about light and bright colors: orange, aqua, robin’s egg blue, yellow, hot pink, etc. Many of us tend to shy away from these hues, as we haven’t seen such bold colors since the late 80’s – and let’s be honest, we all groan a little bit when we look back at photos from that decade.

Fortunately, the experts at Empire Beauty School offered the following tips on how to lighten and brighten up your style this summer:

Make-Up: Don’t be afraid to wear bold eye shadow and lip colors. Apply a neutral color, like taupe, to the base of your eye, and accent it with a brush of aqua in the crease or blue eyeliner across the lash line. If you’re the kind of girl who just can’t let go of her neutral shades, try applying a brighter shade to your cheeks or a shiny salmon colored lip gloss. Using a bronzer with a built in shimmer will also give your skin a summer glow.

Nails: Nail art is fun, versatile, and puts your individuality on display. Opt for a mint green manicure with a funky design on your ring finger, or apply a bright, glittery pink for a look that really pops. Pinterest is a great resource for DIY nail projects and those more complex designs that you could take to your manicurist.

Hair: If your summer plans involve the beach, chances are your hair is going to naturally lighten under the sun. Enhance it even more by adding some blonde streaks to the front, or if you’re feeling bold, go for a radiant red. (Hint: make sure to condition your hair well, as the sun and the ocean can dry it out.) Throw in bright accessories, like sparkling headbands, bows, or clips to keep hair off your face and spice up your look.

For a great, affordable summer makeover, visit a Massachusetts cosmetology school. Empire Beauty School is proud to offer a 20% discount on all services for college students with a valid ID, and free haircuts to any active police, fire, or military (including active reserve).

In spite of having been abandoned in Pocasset, she is a friendly, curious, and playful girl. Dottie gently touches our faces with her paw and affectionately butts her forehead against us. We think this happy girl would prefer to be the only cat in a household, but she might be okay with a dog and should be fine with children. A forever home of her own is our wish for Dottie.

Gather inspiration for your vibrant prom look from these eye catching designer dresses:

Tony Bowls Le Gala Dress 112517

For the adventurous girl, prom is a way to make a statement. This bold, attention grabbing dress catches your eye with a rhinestone-embellished waist before it flows gracefully to the floor in a bright floral pattern. You can rock this floral strapless dress in pink or purple tones.

Choose jewelry that shimmers to play off the rhinestone details, but don’t overdo it on the jewelry, as you don’t want to take away from the statement of the dress. Have fun with your hair style though, with either an elegant updo, or let your mane flow in exaggerated curls. Whichever you choose, you are sure to have all eyes on you on prom night.

Jovani Prom Dress 171734

Get the best of both worlds on prom night in this Jovani prom gown, which features a high-low length style. It gives the illusion of a short, flirty cocktail dress in the front, but surprises you as it ruffles around the waist and falls to the floor behind you in a floral, sequined print around the hem line. The multi-colored, sequined sweetheart neckline is flattering for all figures, and the train adds to the drama of the overall look. This gown is all you could ever want on prom night.

Keep it simple on the jewelry to allow this dress to speak for itself on prom night.

This gorgeous, one shoulder dress offers an elegant combination of rich color. Sleek and stylish, it’s head to toe peacock print will never go out of style. The empire waist belt accentuates your waist while dazzling in the light. The dress splits at your shoulder in a design of rhinestones and bunches in a floral pattern along the shoulder. Unique to most one shoulder dresses, it splits in two straps across the back, creating unique visual interest and ensuring you feel secure and comfortable.

Again, less is more in the jewelry department when accessorizing this dress. For your hair, consider going for a side-swept look or a curled side ponytail to show off the back and the asymmetrical neckline.

Spice up your prom night in this Faviana Prom Dress. Flirty and fun, the white-based gown is splashed with color. The high waist with ruched band breaks up the fitted bodice before the gown flows in a graceful A-line, creating movement with your every step. The bodice, which features a sweetheart neckline, is intricately beaded and flattering on all body types.

This one shoulder dress is not only full of color, but texture as well. Baby blue fades into deeper blue and falls to the floor in a deep purple in a ruched, wavy pattern. Pulled together by a white beaded waist that accentuates your figure, the dress is made of chiffon, which is forgiving and perfect for all figures. This unique gown is not only perfect to wear to prom, but can be worn again to a black tie affair or charity ball.

She came to us because she was unhappy living in a household with very young children. She has been declawed, so she must be adopted as an indoor cat. We recommend that all cats be kept inside but it is especially important with a declawed cat that has no way of defending itself.

Shadow has adjusted to shelter life now and, although she would prefer to be the only pet, might live comfortably with a mellow cat. She still waits for us to come to her but once we stroke and pet her, she is friendly and appreciative of the attention. Shadow would like a calm home without the bustle of toddler aged children, but should fit in well with almost any other type of family.

Our shelter is located down Beagle Lane in Teaticket, at number 44. Adoption hours are Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or by appointment.

We are looking for someone special to adopt our Razz. He is a healthy, nine year old brown tabby with distinctive round, yellow eyes. When Razz first came to us more than a year ago, he was painfully shy and withdrawn. After having spent many months in a loving foster home, Razz has become a different cat. Although he waits to be approached, Razz is super affectionate, rolling over and purring loudly to enjoy receiving any attention. Recently he again spent a month in someone’s home, where he was most happy being a lap cat or curling up on the bed during the night. Now Razz is ready to find his forever home in a quiet setting where he can devote all his affection to his own special person.

Our shelter is located at 44 Beagle Lane in Teaticket. Adoption hours are Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or call our hotline for an appointment.
