Finding a great deal when shopping is always satisfying. We talk a lot these days about shopping local and supporting small business and for good reason! Consignment stores are a great way to support your local retail community while saving money on some of life’s required purchases: clothing and furniture. There are a lot of high quality consignment shops scattered about the Cape. Perhaps one of the largest is Consigning Women in East Harwich.
Consigning Women was opened in August of 2005 by owner Mary Martin, consigning at that time just gently “loved” women’s clothing and accessories. In July of 2010 Mary moved the store into a 7,000 square foot space and began consigning furniture and home décor, along with the clothing.
Mary is no stranger to the retail world. She received a degree in Fashion Merchandising from the University of Vermont and a degree in Fashion Buying and Merchandising from the Fashion Institute of Technology. She started her career working at Lord & Taylor in Manhattan and managed other big name retail stores while living in Naples, Florida. She owned a gift shop in Naples and noticed several upscale consignment stores in the area, immediately thinking the idea was brilliant!
Mary told us that she was taken by the consignment ‘idea’ of people bringing the merchandise to her and if items don’t sell she does not own them, eliminating some of the retail stress of carrying excess inventory. She knew then that one day she would open her own shop, and two children, and 12 years later, she finally realized her goal!
When we met with Mary at the store recently she shared her thoughts about her experiences owning Consigning Women over the years: “It always amazes us how many beautiful items we see every day! Most women love to shop, and we all have items that no longer fit, never really fit to begin with, or just no longer suit our style. We see anywhere from 30-60 consignors a day, and there is never a shortage of clothing! It is a very rewarding business, because we are creating jobs, making money for consignors, and making our customers happy with fabulous items at great prices”!
Consigning Women consigns clothing in sizes 0-24 with quality brands that we all love such as : Talbots; Chicos; Banana Republic; J. Crew; Eileen Fisher; J. Jill and many more. They also have a large selection of accessories and hand bags to help complete the perfect outfit. Their furniture and home décor selection is varied and beautiful, and offers an economical option to furnishing a first home, rental property or even a vacation home here on the Cape!
Consigning Women is located at 175 Route 137, East Harwich, MA 02645. The store is open Monday through Saturday 9am-6pm and on Sunday 11am-4pm. Please visit their website for detailed information about their 5 easy steps to becoming a consignor! They can be reached at 508-432-1577.
