Cape Cod Happening This Weekend

The weekend is here and a special one at that, with today being Veteran’s Day. Let’s remember and celebrate in our own way to say thank you to all who have served and fought for the freedoms we have to enjoy these weekend events!

There is a mix of happenings this weekend around the Cape, from holiday festivals to live music and kids events. The weather may be more typical of New England November days, yet there is plenty to do to stay active! Here are just a few of our favorite picks for this weekend.

On Friday the 11th The Cape Cod Children’s Museum is holding their annual Veteran’s Day Fall Festival from 10:30am-2:00pm. There will be various games, activities and arts and crafts for the whole family. There will also be vendors situated throughout for some early holiday shopping! (more…)

National Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day

Who doesn’t love a mid-Monday chocolate break.  Today, November 7, just happens to be National Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day!

The darker the chocolate the better, we have all heard recently, eating or baking with at least a 70% dark chocolate to obtain the ‘heartiest’ health benefits. As you know chocolate is derived from the Cocoa Bean one of the most concentrated sources of flavanols, a subgroup of the natural antioxidant plant compounds called flavonoids. According to WebMD flavanoids help to reduce the risk of cardio vascular disease; and almonds contain Vitamin E, fiber, folic acid and help to lower cholesterol … so what a great healthy mix, right? Here are just a few of our favorite picks for this weekend.

Rediscovering the Public Library

Remember the days when hanging out in the public library after school or on weekends was the thing to do? Finding a corner to call ‘home’ for those few hours, traveling the peaceful aisles savoring the sights of all the wonderful stories that were being told. When is the last time you remember spending time in a public library?

Cape Cod has some terrific public libraries that not only retain that wonderful spirit from years past, but also have a history deeply rooted in their community. The buildings are often an architectural find as well! A library is more than just a place to borrow a favorite book or find a reference for a paper or article that is being written, it can also offer a place for people to come together and share in storytelling or learning.  The beauty of a library is that the books are free. Electronic book readers are a fantastic idea, yet buying an e-reader is not always an option for everyone…reading a good book should be though. (more…)

A Bountiful Feast

Can you imagine that the 2011 holiday season is almost upon us? Already there are intermittent and beautiful autumn displays of colorful turkeys and cornucopia in shops around town. We do love Thanksgiving and all of the traditions and sharing of food, but for some, the holidays present many challenges not the least of which is being able to provide food for their families. The holidays I would imagine only magnify the stress for those who are currently struggling financially. (more…)

A Walk With Angels

If you are seeking creative ideas, go out walking. Angels whisper to a man when he goes for a walk. ~Raymond Inmon

The dreaded, but expected, writers block gripped like a vice around my head. So I walked, with my dog, studying his rhythmic and tidy little gallop as he scanned the area like a night watchman. I live in a neighborhood where pride is reflected in the well kept row of houses that line the street. It’s my ‘big loop’ walk that is both peaceful and invigorating at the same time. The streets are quiet but for the occasional car driving by and yet I can feel the houses looking back at me as I stroll past. We become where we live, and these houses can tell some wonderful stories! A beautiful evening walk with Willie and that familiar feeling of freedom helps to clear the senses. I realize that everything truly appears so interconnected, as I come home to find this quote I reference above on my computer … and voila, a lovely idea is born for beginning this new journey! Angels? Perhaps; but why not take a walk and decide for yourself. (more…)
