Cape Cod Happening Book Club: January Selection

A New Year, many new beginnings and a new book club pick! Our choice for this month’s book club read is:

A Month In The Country by J.L. Carr

In J. L. Carr’s deeply charged poetic novel, Tom Birkin, a veteran of the Great War and a broken marriage, arrives in the remote Yorkshire village of Oxgodby where he is to restore a recently discovered medieval mural in the local church. Living in the bell tower, surrounded by the resplendent countryside of high summer, and laboring each day to uncover an anonymous painter’s depiction of the apocalypse, Birkin finds that he himself has been restored to a new, and hopeful, attachment to life. But summer ends, and with the work done, Birkin must leave. Now, long after, as he reflects on the passage of time and the power of art, he finds in his memories some consolation for all that has been lost.

Book Club: Devil’s Reef

It’s December and for those of us participating in the CCH Book Club, we have had the month to read Devil’s Reef by Cape Cod resident and author D.E. Karlson. We wanted to share a recent Amazon online review:

“A classic murder mystery with all swirling vortex of memorable characters, delicious settings and shocking twists of events that resists your efforts to put it down for some rest! In Harry McCoy, we have a new kind of hero — circumstances have put this laconic, well-educated former DA beyond the emotional reach of lesser men. Where lesser men would fold, McCoy decides to sink his teeth into a problem. He exudes a characterological incandescence, an inner glow that is ripe for application to new stories, new scenarios and new women. Had there been another title in the series, I would have bought it minutes after finishing this! Not only is this a worthy new literary franchise, but I’m guessing it’s exactly the kind of neo-noir story that belongs on the big screen. Bravissimo, D. E. Karlson! A stellar literary debut.”

So what do you think? We would love to hear from our readers, both feedback and reviews. Also is there something you want to know about the creation of this story and characters? Use the comments section below to submit your feedback and/or questions to the author which will be answered here.

Cape Cod Happening Book Club – November Pick!

Devil’s Reef by DE Karlson

Former FBI agent Harry McCoy is an out-of-work lawyer, and not looking to change that any time soon. Holed up in Miami Beach aboard his sailboat, Hobo, waiting for hurricane season to end, Harry shoots a button man for the mob, in self-defense, and soon has a price on his head, two new clients, and more trouble than he bargained for.

Here’s what readers are saying:

Introducing the Cape Cod Happening Book Club

Who doesn’t love a good book? With the late fall and winter seasons creeping up and perhaps some cooler weather, we may find ourselves spending more time inside curled up with a book we simply can’t put down! The only thing better than a great read is sharing it with others; that’s why we’re starting a Cape Cod Happening Book Club! Cape Cod has some amazing local libraries, fantastic independent book stores; and tons of relaxing spots cape-wide to melt into a good book.

Here’s how it will work:

1) We’ll pick a book every other month (starting November 1) – November, January, March, May, July and September- and post it on CapeCodHappening.com.

2) The following month (December, February, April, June, August and October), Cape Cod Happening will share an online review of the book AND set a date for online discussions via CapeCodHappening.com and social media outlets.

3) Plus, we’ll plan some awesome live events around the Cape for readers to attend throughout the year, where we can mingle, discuss, & perhaps enjoy some delicious coffee or cocktails!

We realize that everyone is busy so you’re welcome to come & go as you please. However, if you’d like to receive email updates for all Book Club related activities, please comment on this post. Suggestions for the first ever Cape Cod Happening Book Club pick are welcome!
