Happening Kids: Beatrice Zaw

Meet Beatrice Zaw our newest Happening Kid. Beatrice is a 16 year old freshman at Falmouth High School. She also happens to be a very talented dancer!

Beatrice has been dancing for six years and currently studies under the direction of Sheena Harper, Artistic Director of Harper Dance Center in Mashpee. In addition to her twice per week practices, Beatrice also helps with the toddler ballet classes for 3-5 year olds. She also volunteers her time at the East Falmouth Elementary School, where on Wednesdays after school they teach ballet to third and fourth grade students interested in learning dance.  For those kids participating in this program that show real promise and motivation a full scholarship to Harper Dance Center is offered. Happening Kids: Sam Graber-Hahn

On any given day if we are lucky, we will cross paths with some remarkable people. Those with talents and insights we hope they share willingly leaving us with an unforeseen ‘gift’.  There is no age limit for those from whom we can learn or be inspired; in fact it is often children who can offer the most clear and unencumbered vision, of learning to appreciate something new in our lives.

One such inspirational person is our newest Happening Kid, Sam Graber-Hahn. Sam lives in Vineyard Haven with his family.  He is a bright, charming and engaging young man, who happens to play the violin … and extraordinarily well I might add! And though the violin playing might be what brought us together for a meeting, it is clear that Sam is more than just a budding classical musician. (more…)

Cape Cod Happening This Weekend: Jan 27-Jan 29

No plans for the weekend yet? If you are in the mood for some live music and particularly in the mood for supporting our musical youth, there are few very inspirational performances this weekend.  Though we haven’t figured out yet how to be in two places at once, we hope you can join us for at least one of these concerts! Check out a few other non-music related events as well and remember no matter what you choose, relax and enjoy! Here are a few of our favorites to share with you.

Happening Kids: Casey Kemp

Meet Casey Kemp an 11 year old dancer from East Falmouth. Casey dances at the Harper Dance Center in Mashpee under the direction of Sheena Harper, Artistic Director. As the oldest male dancer at the center, Casey is a great role model for the younger male students. He doesn’t just dance hard, he works hard as well assisting with two other boys’ dance classes held at the studio.

Casey is a 6th grader at Morse Pond School in Falmouth. He is an A student and his favorite subject is Math. When not dancing Casey is into sports and music, and loves to play Basketball, Baseball and Soccer.

Casey took a break from his hip hop class tonight to sit down and talk with us.

CCH:  How long have you been dancing?

CK:  I have been taking ballet for two years and hip hop for one year. I started out dancing while in 4th grade at East Falmouth Elementary.

CCH:  Hip Hop and Ballet are two very different styles of dance! Do you have a favorite and do you think knowing one helps you to advance in the other?

CK:  My favorite is ballet. Ballet definitely helps me with hip hop because you need to be really flexible to do hip hop, and ballet is all about stretching and flexibility.

CCH:  What do you find most challenging about dancing?

CK:  In ballet it would have to be lifting the girls!

CCH:  Do you have a dance role model, someone who inspires you?

CK: Sheena! Also, Nicola Ferraro who was my teacher before Sheena.

CCH:  Do you want to be a professional dancer when you grow up?

CK: I think I will continue dancing as I grow up, but I want to be a professional basketball player. When I retire from basketball I want to help teach kids to dance like I do now or have my own dance center like Sheena.

Keep working hard Casey and you can make it happen!
