Expert Transmission Tips

AAMCO transmission repairWhen it comes to your car, the transmission is one of the most important components of the vehicle.  If your transmission breaks or needs any type of repair, it can run you a couple hundred or even a couple thousand dollars depending on how severe the damage.  Now, unless you’re a professional, you will have to bring your car into the shop and get it repaired.  In order to prevent a costly situation, there are a number of simple methods that any car owner can do.

Be a better and more cautious driver.  Along with following traffic laws, how a person drives and handles their vehicle makes a world of difference:

  • Follow the speed limit.  Speed limits are not just set to make sure everyone on the road is safe, they are also set to help cars.  When you speed, you add much unnecessary stress to your, car causing it to break down more quickly.
  • Avoid potholes when possible. When you’re on a dark back road in  Cape Cod or visiting the city, driving an average of 25-30MPH, slow down to avoid those big potholes that can cause the bottom of your car to bang against the pavement.
  • Do NOT switch gears while the car is in motion. Don’t go from reverse to drive before coming to a complete stop.  The transmission’s main purpose is to switch gears and maintain the RPMs at a level the car can handle.  When gears rapidly change while the car is in motion, it puts major stress on the transmission, making it work harder than necessary, which could break the system.
  • Tow with caution. If your car is pulling weight that it can’t handle, then the car could break down.  Towing objects causes both the transmission and engine to work harder to pull the additional weight and many times either the engine or transmission cannot physically keep up.

Following these simple tips can save you from a world of aggravation and costly repairs.  The average driver is unaware that they do these habits which cause transmission and other vehicle troubles.  Those who follow these points and get regularly scheduled routine maintenance checks will be free and easy, down the road they go.
